Fusions of Modal Logics and Fitch’s Paradox1

چکیده

281 ing of justifi cation is, in my terms, that (1) the epistemologist has to choose between (a) mind-internalist foundationalism (e.g., evidentialism), (b) mind-externalist foundationalism (e.g., process reliabilism), and (c) mind-internalist coherentism (e.g., simple coherentism), and (2) objections such as the Alternative-Systems Objection and the Isolation Objection dictate against choosing (c) and, therefore, in favor of choosing either (a) or (b). I have challenged this orthodox line on two fronts. I have argued, fi rst, that the epistemologist has a fourth option: (d) mindexternalist coherentism. I have argued, second, that mind-externalist coherentism is immune to both the Alternative-Systems Objection and the Isolation Objection—so that even if these objections are decisive against mind-internalist coherentism, it in no way follows that the epistemologist has to choose between mind-internalist foundationalism and mind-externalist foundationalism.16

Fusions of Description Logics and Abstract Description Systems

Fusions are a simple way of combining logics. For normal modal logics, fusions have been investigated in detail. In particular, it is known that, under certain conditions, decidability transfers from the component logics to their fusion. Though description logics are closely related to modal logics, they are not necessarily normal. In addition, ABox reasoning in description logics is not covere...

A Note on Relativised Products of Modal Logics

One may think of many ways of combining modal logics representing various aspects of an application domain. Two ‘canonical’ constructions, supported by a well-developed mathematical theory, are fusions [17, 6, 7] and products [8, 7]. The fusion L1⊗ · · ·⊗Ln of n ≥ 2 normal propositional unimodal logics Li with the boxes 2i is the smallest multimodal logic in the language with n boxes 21, . . . ...

On Axiomatic Products of PDL and S5: Substitution, Tests and Knowledge∗

Propositional dynamic logic (PDL for short) [5] is an expressive, powerful and convenient logical tool to reason about programs or actions. It has found applications in various fields of computer science, which range from program verification to multi-agent systems. In computer science applications, the modal logic S5 is generally accepted as an adequate representation of the notion of knowledg...

Fusions of Modal Logics Revisited

The fusion Ll Lr of two normal modal logics formulated in languages with disjoint sets of modal operators is the smallest normal modal logic containing Ll [ Lr. This paper proves that decidability, interpolation, uniform interpolation, and Halld encompleteness are preserved under forming fusions of normal polyadic polymodal logics. Those problems remained open in [Fine & Schurz [3]] and [Kracht...

Dov Gabbay: Fibring Logics. a Review

Studying combined logics is a growing trend in applied logic. The general question is this: Suppose language L 3 has been formed by fusion of two languages L 1 and L 2. Let two logics L 1 and L 2 be defined over L 1 and L 2 , respectively. What can be said about conservative extensions L 3 in L 3 ? This is a fairly broad problem. Conservative extensions are not unique, and they may have differe...
